Breaking ground at St John of God - Berwick Hospital

Hansen Yuncken has been appointed Design and Construct contractor for the new St John of God hospital in Berwick. This new $120m facility will be delivered for our joint venture clients, Generation Healthcare and St John of God. When completed in July 2017, the new hospital will service one of Australia’s fastest growing communities and will provide 200 new beds, six operating theatres, two endoscopy theatres, a cardiac/vascular catheter laboratory, six birthing suites and approximately 350 basement car parks. It will also provide the first Intensive Care Unit for the region and a comprehensive range of cardiac services, including a dedicated cardiac unit.

On the 21st January, rain did not dampen the commencement of construction works as the $120 million development was officially launched with a sod-turning ceremony at the Kangan Drive construction site in Berwick.

SJGHC CEO Dr Michael Stanford, Generation Healthcare REIT CEO Mr Miles Wentworth, State Member for Gembrook Mr Brad Battin, Parliamentary Secretary to the Deputy Premier and State Labor Member for Narre Warren Judith Graley, St John of God Berwick Hospital CEO Lisa Norman and Hansen Yuncken’s Chairman, David Beslich broke ground together.

The soil on which the hospital will be constructed was blessed by Father Denis O’Bryan in recognition of the Catholic heritage of St John of God Health Care. Elders from the Wurundjeri tribe will perform a smoking ceremony to prepare the land for construction at a later time.

SJGBH CEO, Lisa Norman said the launch was a significant event for the large and rapidly expanding communities of Casey and Cardinia which the hospital serves. “The construction of the new hospital, which is co-located with Monash Health’s Casey hospital, will form part of a major health precinct in Melbourne and take health care in the region to a new level.”

“The hospital is expected to be completed in 2017, at which time all existing services provided by SGJBH at its historic Gibb Street site will be relocated to the new hospital. The existing Gibb Street campus will be retained and upgraded and will deliver inpatient and outpatient rehabilitation services, bringing the total project costs to $150 million.”

The construction of the new St John of God Berwick Hospital is stage two of a three-stage project for the site. Hansen Yuncken delivered Stage 1 and will be onsite for the expected 80 week construction period for Stage 2.
