It's Getting HOTA in here

“To be part of the construction of this incredible Gold Coast landmark is a significant recognition of our expertise in this area, and a testament to Hansen Yuncken’s growing expertise within the community infrastructure sector, and our ability to deliver outstanding cultural and performing arts projects across Australia.” – Greg Baumann, State Manager QLD

Crowned in a kaleidoscope of colour, this weekend the Gold Coast came alive as we celebrated the launch of the recently completed HOTA Gallery with a spectacular affair, showing off the city’s incredible new asset.

Nestled in the new cultural hub of the Gold Coast the $63 million building is the largest public gallery outside a capital city in Australia. Designed by award-winning Melbourne-based architects ARM, the Gallery includes over 2,000m2 of AAA rated, international standard exhibition space, a dedicated Children’s Gallery, and will be home to the city’s $32 million artwork collection, consisting of more than 4,400 pieces including one of the largest collections of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander art in regional Australia.

The HOTA Gallery project provided a series of challenges and required out-of-the-box strategies from the project team, beginning with the erection of the feature stair that weaves up the tower from ground floor to rooftop bar.

A pop-out structure provides a unique outlook from the Exhibitionist Bar at the top of the five-level building which required extensive planning and input from multiple parties to design. The propping and prefabricated steel column custom cradle system was required to be erected in large sections off site, before being transported and incorporated into the build.

During the delivery of the project, over 1200 people worked on the construction of the new facility, including over 50% of local businesses from the Gold Coast region.

Underpinned by community, this project resonates with Queensland State Manager, Greg Baumann, who understands the value of giving back to the local community - "HY are proud to be able to work with so many specialist Gold Coast-based businesses. This Gold Coast connection means that not only will the HOTA Gallery play host to the work of local artists but that local artisans and tradespeople were an integral part of the construction of the very walls themselves.”

The HOTA Gallery also embodies similarities to another HY cultural icon, the multi-award-winning MONA Gallery (Museum of Old and New Art) in Hobart, which was also successfully delivered by Hansen Yuncken.
