HY welcomes SAASTA Class of 2021

Hansen Yuncken has again partnered with South Australian Aboriginal Secondary Training Academy (SAASTA) and Carey Training to deliver a Certificate II in Construction Pathways.

Our 2021 Class includes twelve terrific years 11 and 12 SAASTA students from both local and regional schools. After the success of last year's class, there was great interest from students this year. Demonstrating this interest, and their commitment to the program, several of the regional students come to Adelaide on their weekend so they are ready to go on Mondays. While they are in Adelaide, the students stay at Regency International College and are supported by SAASTA Vocational Education and Training support personnel while they are away from home.

The students have completed two full training blocks including core and elective modules, with all students successfully completing their White Card and Working at Heights competency training. A practical component of the course involved the students completing elements of a carpentry qualification. They completed the Carry Out Measurements & Calculations and Use of Carpentry Tools & Equipment, with each student making sawhorses and toolboxes.

The next block of their training commences next week and will include site tours at our Lyell McEwin Hospital (LMH) ED Expansion and Roma Mitchell Secondary School projects. Several Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples have been organised to speak to the students, including our own Graduate Builder, Ricky Emili and Gavin Wanganeen (retired AFL player). Providing access to role models for the students along with representatives from the construction industry, is an essential component of this course.

The students will again complete several of their practical modules at our LMH site, refurbishing a donated portable shed. During the year the students will take over where the Class of 2020 finished. They will resume re-cladding the shed providing them practical experience and the satisfaction of completing works on their own training facility.

What makes this program so unique is the support from an extensive group of organisations who are committed to working with the students throughout the year. Establishing these connections, provides the students the best opportunity to secure a trade apprenticeship or traineeship at the completion of their course.
