The National Ice Sports Centre (NISC) is dedicated to improving Australians accomplishments in the Winter Olympics by providing a world-class training and competition facility for recreational and elite athletes, as well as a high quality public recreational facility. Capable of hosting national and international events for ice sports and exhibitions including ice hockey, curling, figure skating and short-course speed skating, Hansen Yuncken created the two Olympic-size standard ice rinks by using world class, innovative ‘thin ice technology’, with one rink adaptable for use as a multi-function facility.

Metaphorically referencing the forms of glacier and rock, the sculptural building – a challenge to construct – clearly signals the centre’s internal functions, which also include the following ancillary features: café, medical centre, bar, gymnasium and offices for the Olympic Winter Institute (OWI).
