Lending A Hand Towards Housing All Australians

7 February, 2024

A group of our Melbourne HY team members recently visited Housing All Australian’s first Pop Up Shelter, The Lakehouse in South Melbourne, to lend a hand cleaning out and preparing rooms in the former aged care facility. Pop Up Shelters or ‘Meanwhile Use’ housing refers to repurposed or vacant buildings awaiting development, used to provide much needed transitional housing.

Working closely with YWCA, our community focused team filled two large industrial skips with redundant materials and furniture, preparing the areas for upgrade works. The works that Hansen Yuncken is completing will breathe new life into the existing facility, providing a safe, comfortable space for those in need.

Planned works for the future will involve renovating several rooms, with the inclusion of laundry and kitchen facilities. Hansen Yuncken, with the support of our construction community of trades and suppliers, have gathered to donate time, materials and resources towards this incredibly worthy cause.

Following a tremendous effort, the team enjoyed a pizza lunch and heard from YWCA, HAA founder and property developer Rob Pradolin and HAA Chair and Director Louise Rutten, discussing the meaningful work these organisations undertake to support women in need, through the facility.

Our team were amazed to hear that woman over 50 are the fastest growing group of people experiencing housing instability in Australia – often as a result of pay inequity, little to no superannuation or savings, divorce, domestic and family violence and time taken as unpaid carers.

Initiatives such as The Lakehouse Pop Up Shelter provide a comfortable space, with supportive services for women who enter the facility.

A fantastic initiative by our Melbourne based HY team, contributing towards such a worthy cause. We are looking forward to the next phases of this meaningful project.
