University of Newcastle Q Building at Honeysuckle

NSW

Delivery Method D&C

Complete

In an extension to our ongoing relationship with the University of Newcastle, Hansen Yuncken was awarded the contract to deliver the University of Newcastle, Honeysuckle City Campus Stage 1A project.

This project was completed in mid 2021 and contains the Hunter Innovation Project (HIP) Innovation Hub, and the School of Creative Industries. The innovation precinct will empower residents to make lasting contributions to the economic and cultural fabric of the Newcastle region.

The building reflects the University’s commitment to sustainable design and operations, with features such as:

  • The first building in Newcastle to use an innovative cross-laminated timber frame, bringing low environmental impacts compared to traditional steel and concrete construction. It also results in minimal construction wastage
  • High thermal performance double glazed façade system, maximising daylight while minimising air conditioning loads
  • Rooftop photovoltaic (PV) solar system and native vegetation planting
  • Rainwater capture, storage and reuse system
  • Outdoor seating created from the University’s soft plastics recycling scheme – turning plastic bags into benches

This significant education project was awarded the following:

  • Newcastle MBA Excellence in Building Awards: Best Public Building $20m - $30m and Best use of Glass.
  • 6 Star Green Star rating (Design and As-Built) and is the first regional building in NSW to attain this.
