Defence High Performance Computing Centre

This state of the art facility provides the Defence Science and Technology Group (DST) and the Australian Defence Organisation with secure, world class capability for high fidelity modelling, simulation, and analysis – critical to safeguarding Australia’s national security.

The purpose built, high security/high integrity (HS/HI) data centre incorporates a Secure Compartmentalised Information Facility (SCIF) and international standard secure conferencing facilities. It was designed to house specialised supercomputing infrastructure and support DST’s classified research networks, ensuring Defence has the tools required to address some of its most complex scientific and engineering challenges.

At its core is Taingiwilta – an advanced supercomputing capability named for the Kaurna word meaning “powerful”. Up to a million times faster than a standard computer, Taingiwilta enables Defence scientists to rapidly process vast datasets, accelerate research, and develop disruptive solutions. This capability will play a pivotal role in supporting the design and development of modern weapon and national security systems, as well as advancing key AUKUS priorities such as nuclear-powered submarines, quantum technologies, and artificial intelligence.

The facility itself, known as Mukarntu – Kaurna for “computer” – was formally launched by the Acting Prime Minister and Minister for Defence, the Hon Richard Marles MP, alongside Chief Defence Scientist Professor Tanya Monro. As part of the opening, a commissioned artwork titled Ngangk Mukarta Warpu Yerta (“Women’s intelligence of the earth”)—created by three generations of Kaurna women—was unveiled, reflecting the deep cultural connection and significance of the site.

Completion of the DHPCC marks a significant milestone in Defence’s mission to strengthen Australia’s sovereign science and technology capability, and Hansen Yuncken is proud to have played a part in delivering this secure and future-focused facility.
