A dramatic and modern transformation to Monash University, the Caulfield Library Redevelopment created a dynamic, engaging and revived educational hub for the campus. Precise planning and detailed design was key to continuity of construction among a hushed library setting. Occupying half of the building’s floor at any one time, an adaptable project team was key to maintaining safety for users, while navigating different areas throughout the staged construction.

An intricate refurbishment, the goal was to better contribute to the University’s excellence in research and education by transforming the only library on the Caulfield campus. The project team integrated advanced technology at every corner, enhancing the student experience. Working in collaboration with project partners, the team was able to deliver a range of individual and collaborative study areas, with an overall increase of seating by 100%, to 1,500 capacity.

The existing fitout had been incrementally layered over time. When stripped back, remarkable 19 metre span post tensioned concrete T beams were revealed – a unique structural solution for its time that allowed high load capacity bookshelves. Working collabortively with consultants, the project team seamlessly integrated the existing structure into a refreshed design – resulting in a multi-storey feature atrium.
