Tasmanian Museum & Art Gallery

Hansen Yuncken was entrusted with the significant restoration of the Tasmanian Museum and Art Gallery (TMAG), located on the traditional lands of the Palawa people and comprising both contemporary and historic structures, including Hobart’s first permanent building and the rare Bond Store, along with the adjacent Watergate Wall. Conservation efforts focused on protecting these 200-year-old structures, which had suffered from recent weather damage and ongoing deterioration.
Leveraging our expertise in heritage restoration, Hansen Yuncken worked closely with Heritage Architects Purcell to restore the Bond Store to its original form through careful re-rendering and re-roofing. Stabilisation and re-rendering of the Watergate Wall at the site’s entrance were also critical elements, preserving the wall’s historical integrity.
This project underscored our commitment to the conservation of culturally significant sites, ensuring these storied structures remain resilient and accessible for future generations.
