University of South Australia M2 Building and The Plasso

This landmark campus building and surrounds represents the physical and philosophical centre of a significant research hub. The intent of the M2 Building was to underpin and propel a nexus between learning, research and industry well into the future. The Plasso is a unique and complementary landscaped area that strongly integrates the building into the fabric of the Mawson Lakes campus.

Hansen Yuncken partnered with John Wardle Architects and Swanbury Penglase Architects to deliver this eye-catching and iconic structure. The building promotes constant knowledge transfer with a range of spaces where a diverse group of industry representatives and researchers can come together both in small collaborative settings, and in a large theatre setting for optimum engagement.

A complex build due to the advanced technology, the facility provides ten PC2 laboratories and one PC3 cell therapy suite with one PC3 laboratory in support, a 100-seat lecture theatre, control room, cafe, formal and informal learning areas, meeting rooms, peristitial spaces, chemical and flammable store and goods receiving stores and plant rooms. Achieving a 5 Star Green Star Rating, the building utilises chilled beams, active mass cooling, fabric socks to deliver supply air to the laboratory spaces, rain water harvesting and grey water technologies.
