University of Tasmania Philip Smith Centre Redevelopment
The UTAS Philip Smith Centre is a bold reinvention of a 1908 heritage-listed landmark, blending historic charm with cutting-edge functionality. This complex refurbishment saw the full demolition and reconfiguration of the basement, ground, first floor and attic to deliver dynamic new teaching spaces and state-of-the-art amenities. With every move guided by a strict Conservation Management Plan, original elements including internal brickwork, timber flooring and cast iron downpipes, were carefully removed, restored and reinstated to shine once more. Precision was key, with specialist heritage subcontractors brought in to protect the fabric of the past while future-proofing the space. The upgrade features a sleek DDA-compliant lift, interconnecting stairs and fully accessible facilities, alongside fresh fitout including new lockers and loose furniture.
