Victoria University Learning Commons and Exercise and Sports Science Precinct
Transforming the student experience, the Exercise Science and Sport Precinct and Learning Commons Project for Victoria University creates a striking presence for the Footscray Park Campus to the north. A large courtyard sits to the south of the building, around which is wrapped a giant folded glass facade. Inside is a vibrant and diverse learning focused environment that supports both informal and formal learning with a series of spaces. The building incorporated a number of highly specialised laboratory spaces for the School of Human Movement Recreation and Performance.
This development incorporated a range of environmentally sustainable initiatives and achieved a 5 Star Green Star Certification. A thermal labyrinth and chimneys support a mixed mode ventilation system that services an open plan workplace environment for academic staff. The facade to the north was constructed from folded zinc and aluminium panels coloured with reference to the landscape setting.
Hansen Yuncken partnered with John Wardle Architects to deliver the foremost sports science facility in Australia. The structure includes 1300 learning spaces, seven large scale collaborative teaching spaces and a suite of world class, high technology laboratories in five major disciplines underpinning Exercise and Sport Sciences. Upfront consultation and rigorous planning was key to the successful six stage handover of the 8,177m2 building and refurbishment for Victoria University.
