The redeveloped and expanded Wollongong Hospital set new benchmarks upon opening in 2015. With a purpose-built Elective Surgical Service Centre containing state of the art hybrid operating theatres, Illawarra and South Coast residents no longer have to travel to Sydney for specialist treatment.
The new six-storey Centre, constructed by Hansen Yuncken, accommodates seven new operating theatres, 14 Stage 1 recovery beds, 72 new surgical beds, six additional intensive care/high dependency unit beds, ten new emergency department beds, a new ambulatory care facility including 22 clinical spaces, and a new sterilising department.
In delivering the new health facility, Hansen Yuncken successfully overcame the challenges of working amongst a live hospital environment, whilst achieving the following objectives:
