The redeveloped and expanded Wollongong Hospital set new benchmarks when it opened its doors in December 2015. With a purpose-built Elective Surgical Service Centre containing state-of the-art hybrid operating theatres, Illawarra and South Coast residents would no longer have to travel to Sydney for specialist treatment of complex cases.

The new six-storey Centre, constructed by Hansen Yuncken, accommodates 7 new operating theatres, 14 stage 1 recovery beds, 72 new surgical beds, six additional intensive care/high dependency unit beds, 10 new emergency department beds, a new ambulatory care facility including 22 clinical spaces, and a new sterilising department.

In delivering the new health facility, Hansen Yuncken successfully overcame the challenges inherent in working in a live hospital environment, implemented our industry-leading infection control plan, developed highly successful aboriginal participation programs and participated in the national Mates in Construction suicide prevention program.
