The Star of the Sea Elders Village on Thursday Island is an aged care facility servicing the Torres Strait Island community. The facility remained operational throughout the project which required Hansen Yuncken to manage multiple stages ensuring the impact on existing residents and staff was minimised wherever possible. A new three storey staff accommodation building, administration facilities and main auditorium complex were built between two existing wings of the retirement village. The existing wings were also refurbished and a significant upgrade to the existing infrastructure to the site.
Up to 38 senior Indigenous people will receive specialist, culturally appropriate care in the new, air-conditioned building. Star of the Sea Elders Village is the only residential aged care service in the Torres Strait. It has operated for some time from a building which was steadily deteriorating. Already having significant experience working on remote islands in the Torres Strait, HY were aware of the potential challenges facing them. The physical location of the project and lack of construction materials on the Island required the barging of materials and removal of waste to be undertaken from Cairns to the Island, taking roughly 3 days.
The facility will provide a much-needed service and provide physical, emotional and spiritual support to the people of Thursday Island.
